Prevention of deforestation EUDR
Responsible business standards
Preventing deforestation is crucial to maintaining the ecological balance of our planet. Forests perform many important functions – they regulate the climate, purify the air, protect soils from erosion and store water. Forests are also home to countless species of plants and animals, providing a source of biodiversity without which ecosystems cannot function properly.
Keeping forest areas intact is an investment in the future – for the environment, the climate and the communities that benefit from it. Actions to reduce deforestation are therefore not only a duty, but also the foundation of sustainable development and responsible management of natural resources.
EUDR: Forest protection in business practice
Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 of the European Parliament and of the Council on forest-based products from deforestation-free sources (EUDR) is an important step in the fight against global deforestation and forest degradation. Its aim is to ensure that only products and raw materials that have not contributed to forest destruction enter the EU market. The Regulation covers commodities such as timber, soy, palm oil, cocoa, coffee, rubber, cattle and derived products, including paper and cowhide.
The EUDR came into force on 29 June 2023, and a 18-month transition period has been provided for businesses, ending on 30 December 2025, to allow time for processes and supply chains to be fully adapted to the new requirements.
The EUDR requires businesses to demonstrate that goods placed on the EU market:
- do not originate from areas deforested after 31 December 2020,
- have been produced in accordance with the applicable law of the country of origin,
- are subject to due diligence, enabling the supply chain to be traced back to the source of the raw material.
